Do your research

“I think tickets to the game are $10”

“No, I’m pretty sure they’re $15.”
“I mean no way because Joe went last week and said they were $10.”

“Just trust me they’re $10.”

All of this stupid unnecessary dialogue can be saved if you spent two minutes looking up the price of the game online. Do you research. Do not live off of assumptions and things you hear from people. Do your research and prevent the facts when asked.

Languages

#151

You are got to learn how to speak another language. It opens up your world. Makes you meet more people, makes you smarter. Why would you deny yourself that?

Uncomfortability

#150

1-11-21

9:30am

Sometimes you have to seek discomfort to grow. There is no growth in comfortability. Putting yourself in a foreign situation makes you learn more. Awkwardness means there’s something to learn. That’s why so many people describe going abroad as “life changing.” Don’t stay in your bubble. Step outside of the box into the universe of possibility.

Set your alarm

#149

10:20am

Building habits starts with one thing: waking up early. Remember to set your alarm so you can wake up and start your day. I messed this up two days in a row. Now I feel like an idiot.

Be the board

#148

10:31am

1-9-21

You are not the pawn on the chess board. You are the whole board. Everything that happens, has happened, will happen, passes through you. So if something arises that irks you, remember that you are the board. It’s not your “fault,” it just happened. If you’re the pawn, then kick and scream and complain. If you’re the board and playing the game, then take it as it is.

Reading

#147

1-8-21

9:10am

Maybe I’ve made a blogpost about this in the past. I want to reiterate that books are amazing. There’s some quote from some old man that said something along the lines of, “The quality of your life is dependent on two things: your relationships and the books you read.” I believe it. If you don’t read, you’re stagnant. You refuse to grow. You refuse to learn. And if that’s the case you deserve to die along because nobody deserves to have a stagnant complacent spouse.

Habit Stacking

1-7-20

10:06am

#146

If you want to build a habit on something, identify two positive habits you already have going, such as meditation or journaling. Then sandwich your new habit in between the two. For example, meditate for 10 minutes, blog for 5 minutes, journal for fifteen minutes. Viola.

Habits

#145

1-6-21

To build a habit, you must first ingrain it into your identity. For example, if you want to practice French, tell yourself that you are a Francophone. Of course you won’t violate your identity! Then your habit of practicing French everyday will stick!

California Exodus

#141

11:19am

12-30-20

Everybody is leaving California. Why? This confuses me. I want to move there. If everybody is moving out, then should I move in? Gosh. So much freight because of the golden state. Nowhere else can you find the beach and mountains so close. It’s just too perfect. Maybe that’s why everybody flooded over there and now taxes are high, real estate is expensive, there’s many homeless people, gas is expensive, traffic sucks, and the list goes on. But the beaches and mountains and the weather! Is that enough for me? Was that enough for the people that moved? It must not have been. As I get older, maybe those things won’t matter to me. And taxes and housing prices and traffic will. My oh my.

Steps

The old formula is, inspiration leads to motivation leads to action. That won’t work anymore. Now it is action leads to inspiration which leads to motivation. That works a lot better. If you’re feeling stuck, just work. Do something. Two crappy pages a day as Tim Ferriss says. Writing is editing.

Neurosis

#139

12-27-20

11:01am

If you’re feeling neurotic, put your phone down, start meditating. Aim for ten minutes. Focus on your breath. That’s it. That simply. Don’t look to food, things, or people to make you feel better. Look to yourself to feel better. Sit there and breath and you will feel better. Just ten minutes.

Yelling

#138

12-26-20

9:28am

If you want somebody to do something, don’t yell at them. When has yelling ever been productive? Except for in a sports game. Other than that, if you’re at home and the dishes aren’t done, don’t yell at somebody. Find a method that creates more possibility. A method that makes them do the dishes because they want to. Not because they were yelled into doing it.
