Close to 100

When I started this, I set out to write 100 posts. I am on number 92. Not sure yet if I will stop when I get to 100. I do know that this is a good practice. Writing something every single day. All the days I didn’t write something before this, I missed out on all those ideas. Generating or fortifying an idea everywhere is a good practice. Even though it doesn’t really feel like much in the moment. Here’s to possibly 100 more.

Decisions

Everybody hates making decisions. Fear of getting it wrong. Fear of blame. Fear of not making the best choice. That’s where leaders step in. They make decisions. And people follow them because if the leader gets it wrong, then they’re in the clear. The leader has all the blame. That’s why it’s easy to follow but not easy to lead. But don’t you want it your way? Don’t you want it exactly how you perceive it? If that’s the case, then you have to lead. You have to make decisions. If you make a decision, confidently, unwaveringly, people will follow. People will trust you if you trust the decision and yourself. Now you are a leader. What will you do about it?

Fear

Yesterday I found myself fearful of a such a small little thing. Here I am during Corona season, hyping myself up with all this self help stuff. But once I’m presented with a fearful opportunity, I cower away. What am I doing? It’s one thing to say it. But it’s another to walk the walk. Don’t be that guy who’s all talk. Do something. Don’t hide behind fear.

more growth!

I don’t want to jump the gun, but I can sense myself changing. That sounds corny. But changing into someone whose an optimist, who leverages the power of enthusiasm and doing emotional labor. If you don’t like who you are now, why don’t you change it? Why stay stagnant in your subpar version of yourself? Why are you in a subpar version of yourself yet you desire a girlfriend or boyfriend? Do you think they deserve your shitty version? That’s just totally unfair to them. If you know you’re not at all close to your potential, then why do you think it’s okay to share yourself with someone else intimately and romantically? Your’e just using them to make yourself feel better! So grow. And continue growing and learning. Stop being complacent! Put the work in. You will thank yourself later.

Growth

Around four years ago, I asked a girl on a date. I didn’t get a second date. Yesterday, I had dinner with that same girl. And it was incredible. How far we’ve come! Four years ago I was an insecure little boy who had no idea what the heck is going on. Some of those statements are still true, but look at us now. Four years later, having such a pleasant conversation. There is so much growth to be had. SO much!

Meat and Potatoes

If your mother prepares meat and potatoes for you every day for dinner, you’ll start to get used to it. The meat is great, easily the principal part of the dish. That’s what its the meat. And the potatoes – meh. They’re good too, but not the main act. One day, your mother doesn’t make meat. It’s just potatoes. You’re upset because normalcy is broken. But you don’t have a choice. So you sit down and eat your potatoes. You realize, “Wait these potatoes are actually really good!” You’ve been blinded by the meat for so long, you didn’t realize you’ve got some real good potatoes. It took removing the meat, for you to appreciate potatoes.

This idea is called the limit – based off of Jacques Lacan’ objet a. The thing that is limiting us from having all that we want, actually leads us to satisfaction. That’s why coke comes in a can. That’s why your iPhone isn’t perfect. That’s why removing the meat made the potatoes taste better. Appreciate the lack you have.

Expectations

I’m sure I’ve written about this before, but I’m going to write about it again. Whenever you picture something that will happen, an event, an outcome, a text message exchange, whatever. It usually never ever plays out the way you pictured it. Of course it doesn’t. Out of all the outcomes that could happen, what makes yours the right one? So it is reassuring to know that whatever happens in your head, won’t happen in real life. That is one less outcome to think about it. And I find that beautiful. How beautiful it is that Life can take us in every which way possible. There’s no need to fear or predict. Just stand ready and it’ll happen.

A simple concept

Professionals do things every single day regardless of if they want to or not. Amateurs do things only when inspiration strikes. A simple concept. Now it’s easier to do something everyday when you enjoy that thing. You will have less days where you wake up and think “shit I don’t wanna work today.” But inevitably you will have at least one of those days. So pick something where you love so much and do it everyday. That’s life’s biggest challenge.

Unlimited Money

#84

If you had unlimited money – think about it – literally unlimited money, do you think you would be happy? You would buy this house, that car, those toys, maybe that car too. But do you think you’d be happy? Imagine just going on a full shopping spree on amazon. You’d be able to pay for one day shipping, so all your little goodies will come tomorrow! Wow! I feel as though, after that high dies down, your life will be the same. There are some large benefits that come from buying a nice home and car, but your life will be the same. Your well being, the person that tells you to get up in the morning, to not yell at that person in line, or it’s okay to cry now, they won’t be affected. Sure your outer self will look more happy in the possessions you have. But I’m not sure if you will actually be better. Before buying something, ask yourself, will this improve the utility of my life and those around me? If so, then think some more then buy it.

Beliefs

I agree with Seth Godin when he says that “humans are plastic, not in the bad sense”. Plastic in the sense of malleable, adaptable, able to be built up.

I believe that mentors can be found in authors, podcasters, content creators. No more needing to complain about nobody pouring into you.

I believe that fear in the wrong setting is a wasted thought.

I believe that everybody can amount to something extraordinary if only they believe in themselves and put in the work. The only difference between those who are extraordinary and those who aren’t is belief and work. Talent and luck can help but are not essential.

I believe that in the fight to be extraordinary only those who are selfless and genuinely care about others will come out on top.

Blurry

If you take 1000 pictures and 600 of those pictures are blurry, wouldn’t you change something about how you’re shooting? At what point in those 1000 would you change something? You clearly see that a large majority are just plain ugly. So if your’e doing something, and it’s not working, change something. There’s no need to continue taking more ugly photos. Doing the exact same thing will not produce results. You have to change something to produce better results.

Positivity

7/22/20

Take a day a regular day and try to be positive – an optimist. Just fake it the whole day if you have to. Then the next day, live your regular old pessimistic self. Which day was better? Perhaps the forced day will feel fake. Because that’s what it is – forced and fake. But still, did it feel better? What if that behavior was ingrained within you? Do you think then it would feel immensely better? Positivity and optimism can be learned. And I assure you, those who are positive feel better. And everyone around them naturally feels better. You don’t watch YT videos that aren’t high energy and positive. Seemingly, every youtuber has now adopted this energy and persona – high energy lots of happy yelling at the camera. Positive is better than negative. That seems like common sense. Yet not enough people adopt it.

Story

We create stories in our heads to get the thing we don’t actually need. “well if I don’t eat now, I’ll be super hungry later so I should just eat this donut now.” False. How do you know what’s gonna happen later? Luckily because these stories are easily created, they are easily changed. So change your story. You won’t be hungry. Wait until you have real food.

Travel

Travel is expensive! But think of all the growth that happens when you travel abroad. Is it worth spending that much money? Do you get more value from that trip than what the trip cost? I’m sure. How can you quantify the cost of hearing the Mosques in Tunis ring with Ramadan prayers? Or eating Papa John’s pizza in the middle of nowhere at a gas station in Sfax. Or finding an orthodontist all on your own and getting operated on only by speaking French? Or ordering a salmon sandwich and being mistaken for someone who speaks Portuguese? You just can’t quantify stuff like that. So travel. Go see the world. There’s so much to see.

Some of my favorite forms of learning

  • Podcasts
  • Audio books
  • Books
  • YT videos

But none of this beats actually doing. Although these mediums are pretty great.
